Where it came from
City's Blessing is a specialized token card released within The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander set in late 2023. It functions as a reminder card for players who control the 'City's Blessing,' a state granted by the keyword ability 'Ascend.' This mechanic was originally introduced in the Rivals of Ixalan expansion to represent the exploration and eventual discovery of the golden city of Orazca, allowing players to gain a permanent bonus once they satisfy specific board conditions.
The card features artwork consistent with the aesthetic of the Ixalan plane, which draws heavily from Mesoamerican mythology and high-fantasy archaeology. Designed by the Magic: The Gathering art team, the illustration uses motifs of ancient stone architecture and celestial energy to convey the weight and significance of the blessing. These tokens serve a purely utility-based purpose in the game, providing a physical marker for tracking complex game states during the fast-paced nature of Commander gameplay.
