Where it came from
City's Blessing is a unique mechanic-based token card released in the 2018 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Rivals of Ixalan. It was designed to represent the 'Ascend' keyword, a state-based game mechanic that rewarded players for controlling at least ten permanents. The card serves as a visual marker, providing a persistent reminder that the player has achieved the game-state requirements necessary to gain the flavor-rich boon of the city.
The card’s aesthetic reflects the Mesoamerican-inspired architecture and lush, jungle-based lore of the Ixalan plane. Its design utilizes the distinct, vibrant art style curated for the set, emphasizing the monumental stone structures and golden iconography central to the region’s mythology. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its clarity and the thematic weight it added to the gameplay experience, effectively bridging the gap between mechanical tracking and immersive narrative.
