Where it came from
Solemn Simulacrum first appeared in the Mirrodin set in 2003, designed by Mark Rosewater as a tribute to Jens Thoren, the winner of the 2002 Magic Invitational. The card represents a mechanical construct built to wander the multiverse, reflecting the lonely nature of the card's namesake player. Over time, it became a staple in the Commander format due to its utility in providing both ramp and card advantage, leading to numerous reprints across various specialized sets.
The Commander 2020 version, featuring the illustration by Dan Dos Santos, maintains the iconic aesthetic of the character. Dos Santos utilized his signature painterly style to emphasize the construct's weathered, ancient appearance, capturing a sense of profound melancholy and mechanical history. This particular iteration was widely praised by players for its atmospheric art and its continued reliability as an essential building block for casual and competitive Commander decks alike.
