Where it came from
Cleaver Skaab was released in 2021 as part of the Midnight Hunt Commander set, an expansion designed to accompany the main Innistrad: Midnight Hunt Magic: The Gathering release. The card embodies the gothic horror aesthetic central to the Innistrad plane, focusing on the dark science of stitchers who construct artificial life from reanimated corpse parts. It functions as a creature card that rewards players for sacrificing their own units to create tokens, leaning heavily into the set's graveyard-centric mechanical themes.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Mathias Kollros, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering visual identity. Kollros utilized a stark, visceral style to capture the gruesome nature of the Skaab—flesh-constructs synonymous with the blue-aligned scientists of Innistrad. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by players seeking to optimize Commander decks centered on zombie tribal synergies and sacrifice-based value engines, remaining a staple choice for those looking to reinforce their graveyard-reanimation strategies.
