Where it came from
Cleaver Skaab was released in 2021 as part of the Midnight Hunt Commander set for the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the set's graveyard-centric mechanics, specifically focusing on the blue-black 'zombie tribal' theme prevalent in the Innistrad plane. Its ability to create token copies of creatures by sacrificing others draws directly from the gothic horror trope of the stitched-together construct, a staple of the setting's aesthetic.
The card features artwork by artist Johannes Voss, who utilized the set's gloomy, moonlit color palette to emphasize the grotesque nature of the creature. Within the competitive Commander format, the card is recognized for its utility in 'aristocrats' strategies, which leverage the sacrifice and death of creatures to generate value. It was received by players as a solid inclusion for zombie-themed decks, appreciated for its synergy with recursive graveyard mechanics rather than as a centerpiece for high-power tournament play.
