Where it came from
Clever Impersonator was introduced in the 2014 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Khans of Tarkir. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was themed around the warlord-led clans of the plane of Tarkir, focusing on a multi-colored mechanical identity. The card was designed to push the boundaries of the blue color identity by allowing players to copy almost any nonland permanent on the battlefield, reflecting the set's emphasis on adaptability and the shifting nature of the clans.
The artwork was illustrated by Chase Stone, who opted for a surreal, fluid depiction of a shape-shifting entity. The design intent was to capture the visual concept of a creature mid-transformation, mirroring the card's mechanical utility. Upon release, it was well-received by the player base for its versatility and its ability to function as a clone effect that could target planeswalkers and enchantments, marking it as a distinct entry in the history of blue clone-type cards.
