Where it came from
Clever Impersonator was originally released as part of the Khans of Tarkir expansion in September 2014, a set centered on the warring clans of the plane of Tarkir. This specific promotional version, marked with collector number 34p, was distributed as a participation reward or prize for events such as Friday Night Magic. The card features unique promo-only foil treatment and alternative frame aesthetics that differentiate it from the standard set version.
The card was illustrated by Jason Rainville, who captured the shapeshifter's essence by depicting it in a state of fluid, mercurial transition. The design team aimed to create a versatile clone effect capable of copying non-creature permanents, a departure from the traditional creature-only limitations of previous cards in this category. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its tactical flexibility and its impact on the Commander format, where it remains a staple for its ability to mirror powerful artifacts or planeswalkers.
