Where it came from
Cliffside Market was released as part of the Planechase Anthology set in 2016, a collection that aggregated various Plane cards from the Planechase multiplayer format. These cards represent the shifting landscapes of the Multiverse in Magic: The Gathering, designed to introduce chaotic, location-based environmental effects into gameplay. This specific plane is themed around the chaotic, mercantile world of Mercadia, reflecting the setting's history of trade and political maneuvering.
The card’s visual design was created to evoke the bustling, vertical architecture of Mercadian marketplaces. Like other cards in the Planechase series, the artwork emphasizes a sense of scale and otherworldly atmosphere, intended to immerse players in the specific plane's flavor. The mechanics were crafted to mirror the card's theme, allowing players to trade control of nonland permanents, thereby simulating the turbulent and opportunistic nature of the Mercadian economy.
