Where it came from
Clone is one of the foundational creatures of Magic: The Gathering, first appearing in the Alpha set in 1993. It was designed to represent the concept of a shapeshifter that enters the battlefield as a copy of another creature, a mechanic that has become a staple of blue-aligned deck building. The version released in the Magic 2011 core set served to reintroduce this classic utility card to a new generation of players, maintaining its status as a reliable way to turn an opponent’s greatest threat against them.
The Magic 2011 illustration for Clone was created by artist Igor Kieryluk. His take on the creature emphasizes a sleek, ethereal, and somewhat unsettling humanoid form, shifting away from the more literal shapeshifter aesthetics of previous versions. This design choice highlights the creature's fluidity and mimicry, fitting the high-fantasy visual evolution of the game during that era, and was generally well-received by players for its crisp, modern aesthetic.
