Provenance

Where it came from

Clone was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a foundational blue creature card. Its core mechanic, which allows the player to have the creature enter the battlefield as a copy of any other creature, was inspired by the shapeshifting tropes of science fiction and fantasy literature, intended to provide strategic flexibility and mirror-match potential for players.

The Magic 2013 version of Clone features artwork by Greg Staples, who moved away from the traditional, more literal interpretations of the creature seen in early editions. Staples utilized a more atmospheric and painterly style to emphasize the surreal, shifting nature of the entity. Upon its release in this core set, the card was well-received by the player base for its classic functionality and the high-quality digital aesthetic that aligned with the modern visual language of the game.
