Cloudpost

Cloudpost was first released in 2003 as part of the Mirrodin expansion, a set designed to immerse players in an artificial, metallic plane governed by the expansion's titular artifact-focused mechanics. The card was designed to support the 'Locus' land subtype, intended to reward players for controlling multiple locations across the desolate, mechanical landscape of Mirrodin. Its mechanical utility was immediately apparent, as it provided an efficient way to generate large amounts of mana in specialized deck architectures.

The artwork for Cloudpost was created by the illustrator Martina Pilcerova, who contributed a significant number of cards to the Mirrodin block. Her design aesthetic for the card captures the eerie, sprawling industrial architecture of the plane, emphasizing the vast, interconnected nature of the land. Upon its release, the card became a staple in various constructed formats, eventually gaining such notoriety for its power level that it became a defining element of specific competitive strategies that relied on its ability to rapidly ramp up mana production.
