Where it came from
Cloven Casting was released in 2009 as part of the Alara Reborn set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. As the final set in the Shards of Alara block, Alara Reborn was unique in that every card featured was multicolor, reflecting the chaotic fusion of the five shards of the Alara plane. This card specifically embodies the red-blue color pairing, known in the game's lore as Izzet, and highlights the plane's shifting, unstable magical environment.
The artwork for Cloven Casting was provided by artist Dan Dos Santos, who utilized a vivid, dynamic style to visualize the concept of duplicating spells. The design intends to convey the theme of instability and magical excess, reinforcing the set's mechanical focus on mana-intensive, high-impact spells. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its high mana cost, leading it to be viewed primarily as a niche tool for casual Commander play rather than a staple in competitive, faster-paced formats.
