Where it came from
Sanity Gnawers was released in 2009 as part of Alara Reborn, the third and final set in the Shards of Alara block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set is notable for being the first to consist entirely of multi-colored cards, a design choice intended to represent the convergence of the five distinct shards of the plane of Alara into a single, unified reality.
The card was illustrated by Dave Kendall, whose work on the piece leans into the macabre, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the Grixis shard. As a common-rarity creature, its role was to provide mechanical support for the set's graveyard-recursion themes, specifically designed to reward players for cycling or discarding cards to fuel the complex multi-color interactions that defined the Alara Reborn limited environment.
