Where it came from
Command the Dreadhorde was released in 2019 as part of the War of the Spark expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a pivotal moment in the set's narrative, depicting the villainous Nicol Bolas summoning the fallen soldiers of the Amonkhet plane to aid his conquest of Ravnica. The design emphasizes the necromantic nature of the act, requiring the player to pay life equal to the total mana value of the cards brought back from the graveyard, balancing high-impact power with a significant risk to the user's survival.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the grim, ethereal aesthetic of the Dreadhorde army as they rise from the earth. Within the competitive meta, the card quickly gained notoriety for its ability to swing games decisively, leading to its inclusion in various high-tier Constructed decks. Its mechanical identity fits squarely within the black color pie, rewarding players for successfully filling their own graveyards throughout the game before executing a singular, board-altering maneuver.
