Command the Chaff

Command the Chaff was introduced as part of the 2019 Mystery Booster Playtest Cards, a series of experimental designs included in limited-run booster packs distributed at major Magic: The Gathering conventions. These cards were created to offer players a glimpse into the internal R&D process, showcasing mechanics and concepts that were never intended for standard tournament-legal release. The card itself utilizes a stark, placeholder-style aesthetic characteristic of playtest documents, prioritizing functional clarity over traditional card art.

The design of Command the Chaff reflects a whimsical exploration of card interaction, specifically playing with the 'chaff'—the common, low-value cards often discarded by players. By allowing users to interact with cards they own from outside the game, the design team at Wizards of the Coast leaned into the 'silver-bordered' design philosophy of breaking traditional gameplay boundaries. It was received by the community as a rare curiosity, valued primarily for its status as a glimpse into the creative brainstorming sessions of the game's designers.
