Where it came from
Commune with Dinosaurs was first introduced in the 2017 Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering, later appearing as a reprint in the 2020 Jumpstart set. The card was designed as an efficient green sorcery intended to support tribal dinosaur decks, allowing players to filter their library for creature or land cards. It fits into the broader mechanical theme of the Ixalan block, which emphasized prehistoric creatures and exploration-themed deck archetypes.
The artwork for this specific printing was illustrated by Zack Stella. Stella's design focuses on the thematic connection between the humanoid inhabitants of the plane of Ixalan and the colossal dinosaurs they coexist with. Upon its release, the card became a staple in limited formats and casual tribal decks due to its low mana cost and reliable utility, cementing its reputation as a functional essential for dinosaur-themed strategies.
