Where it came from
Commune with Lava was introduced in the Commander 2020 release, a set designed to expand the popular multiplayer Commander format for Magic: The Gathering. Originally debuting in the Magic Origins set, this card serves as a versatile red utility spell that allows players to exile cards from the top of their library and cast them until the end of their next turn, providing a unique method of card advantage that balances risk and reward in high-stakes gameplay.
The card features artwork by Anna Steinbauer, who utilized a vibrant, volcanic color palette to capture the chaotic energy of the spell. The design aesthetic emphasizes the fluid and dangerous nature of elemental fire, aligning with the red mana identity of impulsivity and power. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid inclusion for decks focused on burn strategies or those requiring consistent card selection in the late game.
