Provenance

Where it came from

Compulsion was originally released as a rare card in the 2001 Odyssey expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the card was intended to provide blue-aligned players with a repeatable card-draw engine that required a strategic sacrifice, reflecting the game's focus on resource management and deck velocity during that era.

In 2021, Wizards of the Coast introduced The List as a curated selection of reprints inserted into Set Boosters to celebrate the game's history. Compulsion was included in this initiative to provide players with access to older, niche mechanical utility cards, featuring the original illustration by Arnie Swekel, whose distinct fantasy aesthetic defined much of the card's visual identity during the early 2000s.
