Compost

Compost was originally released in the Urza's Destiny expansion in 1999 before being reprinted as part of the Seventh Edition core set in 2001. As a black enchantment, it was designed to function as a highly specialized graveyard hate card, offering players a way to gain card advantage by drawing from their library whenever a green card was put into an opponent's graveyard. Its inclusion in Seventh Edition marked a period where Wizards of the Coast was carefully curating the core set to provide functional tools for sideboarding against specific deck archetypes.

The card’s artwork was rendered by Marc Fishman, whose work during this era often leaned into the gritty, organic aesthetic common to black-aligned spells in the game. Fishman’s illustration depicts the literal decomposition of organic matter, visually reinforcing the card’s mechanical focus on decay and death. While Seventh Edition is remembered for introducing a new card frame design to the franchise, Compost remained a niche but effective tactical tool, noted by players for its efficiency in matchups where green resources were plentiful.
