Where it came from
Congregate was reprinted in the Magic 2015 core set as a functional piece of white-aligned defensive magic. First introduced in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, the card reflects the color pie's emphasis on communal healing and stall tactics, designed to stabilize a player's life total in longer multiplayer or casual games by scaling its effect based on the number of creatures on the battlefield.
The Magic 2015 version features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss. Known for his evocative and painterly style, Voss focuses on the sense of solidarity and divine protection inherent to the spell's flavor. The design was received by the player base as a straightforward utility card, serving its role as a situational common that provides a significant buffer against aggressive decks without disrupting the underlying balance of the core set environment.
