Where it came from
Congregate was originally printed in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, but this specific version appeared in the 2009 Planechase release. As part of the Planechase supplement, the card was included in the Metallic Dreams preconstructed deck, designed to showcase the new planar travel mechanic which shifted the focus of gameplay toward shifting environments and shifting strategic advantages.
The artwork for this iteration was illustrated by Greg Staples, who moved away from the more literal, early depictions of the spell to focus on a more ethereal, light-infused representation of communal healing. While the card is a standard common-rarity staple of white-aligned lifegain strategies, its inclusion in the Planechase set helped reintroduce the card to a new generation of multiplayer-focused players, cementing its status as a reliable utility choice in Commander-adjacent formats.
