Where it came from
Congregate was originally printed in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, serving as a quintessential white instant that reflects the game's early focus on reactionary, life-gain-focused defensive play. The Masters 25 set was released in 2018 to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Magic: The Gathering, featuring a curated selection of cards that spanned the game's entire history. By including Congregate, Wizards of the Coast sought to highlight the nostalgic mechanics that defined the game's formative years for long-time players.
The artwork for this specific printing was created by artist Daren Bader, who has contributed extensively to the visual language of the game. Bader’s illustration captures a moment of collective invocation, aligning with the card's function of rewarding the player for the number of creatures currently on the battlefield. Within the context of the Masters 25 release, the card serves as a thematic bridge between the game's complex mechanical evolution and its simpler, flavor-driven roots.
