Where it came from
Conjurer's Closet was released in 2012 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Commander 2011 product line, specifically debuting in the Devour for Power deck. It was designed to provide players with a repeatable way to exile and return creatures to the battlefield, a mechanic colloquially known as blinking. This effect was intended to trigger enter-the-battlefield abilities multiple times per round, offering strategic value in the multiplayer-focused Commander format.
The card features artwork by Kev Walker, a prominent illustrator in the game's history. Walker opted for a dark, industrial aesthetic, depicting a menacing iron cabinet that traps and reconstitutes its subjects. The design reflects the card's function of refreshing a creature's presence by passing it through a magical, albeit restrictive, space. Upon its release, it became a staple in decks utilizing powerful summon effects, garnering a reputation for its versatility and consistent utility in long-form games.
