Where it came from
The Construct token (card number 42) was released as part of the Commander Masters set in 2023. As a token card, it serves as a functional representation of a creature created by various spells and abilities within the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, rather than being a playable deck card in its own right. Its inclusion in this set was intended to provide players with a thematic and cohesive visual aid for mechanics that summon construct-type entities.
The artistic direction for this token follows the high-fantasy aesthetic established for the Commander Masters release, prioritizing mechanical clarity while maintaining the intricate, mechanical visual language associated with constructs. Illustrators for token sets in this era were tasked with creating distinct, recognizable designs that fit within the broader visual lexicon of the game, ensuring that players could easily identify the creature's presence on the battlefield during complex multiplayer games.
