Where it came from
The Construct token (collector number 4) was released as part of The Brothers' War expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2022. This set served as a thematic return to the lore-heavy origins of the game, focusing on the historical conflict between the artificer brothers Urza and Mishra. The token was specifically designed to represent the mechanical army units frequently generated by the set's various artifact cards, serving as a tactical extension of the battlefield board state.
The visual design of the Construct token was created by artist Fajareka Setiawan, who utilized a distinct, weathered industrial aesthetic consistent with the expansion's retro-futuristic art deco influences. By opting for a brass-heavy color palette and mechanical textures, the illustration captures the essence of the 'Sylexian' war era. Upon its release, the token was well-received by players for its clear thematic integration and its role in streamlining the physical management of complex artifact-based card interactions.
