Where it came from
The Island card from the Ninth Edition core set of Magic: The Gathering was released in 2005. As a core set, Ninth Edition served to introduce new players to the game while featuring artwork recycled from previous expansions. This specific card, numbered 337, utilizes illustration by Rob Alexander, a prolific landscape artist whose work has defined the visual identity of basic lands throughout the game's history.
Alexander's design for this particular iteration of the Island emphasizes a serene, pastoral environment, moving away from the more abstract or aggressive terrain depictions found in some other sets. Ninth Edition was the final core set to feature the classic white-bordered design, marking a transition point in the aesthetic evolution of the game. It was received by the player base as a staple utility card, valued for its functional simplicity and the reliable, atmospheric quality that Alexander consistently brought to the game's foundational landscape pieces.
