Provenance

Where it came from

Contingency Plan was originally released as part of the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2016. The card was designed as a blue sorcery reflecting the set's themes of cosmic horror and strategic manipulation, set on the plane of Innistrad. It allows a player to look at the top five cards of their library and reorganize them, mechanically representing the desperate, calculated preparations made by the citizens of Innistrad as they faced the eldritch influence of the titan Emrakul.

The artwork was illustrated by Chase Stone, who captured a grim, atmospheric moment of magical foresight amidst a chaotic, purple-hued landscape. When the card was later added to 'The List'—a rotating selection of cards from Magic's history that can appear in Set Boosters—it gained renewed visibility, offering players a functional tool for deck filtering that remains a subtle nod to the narrative tension of the Shadows over Innistrad block.
