Where it came from
Contract from Below was released in 1993 as part of the original Magic: The Gathering set. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was intended to capture the flavor of a Faustian bargain, offering immense power to the player in exchange for a significant personal sacrifice. Within the mechanics of the game, its ability to draw seven cards for a single black mana made it one of the most efficient and potent cards ever printed.
The card's artwork, illustrated by Christopher Rush, features a dark, atmospheric depiction of a demonic pact, aligning with the grim aesthetic of early Magic sets. Due to its extreme power level, the card was eventually banned in nearly all tournament formats, cementing its status as a legendary piece of trading card history that reflects the experimental and often volatile design philosophy of the game's initial release.
