Where it came from
Contract from Below was released in 1993 as part of the Alpha set, the inaugural print run of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game created by Richard Garfield. Designed to provide a powerful, low-cost advantage, the card reflects the early philosophy of the game where resource trade-offs were often extreme. It was intended to evoke the high-stakes, Faustian nature of magical bargains, fitting the dark fantasy aesthetic established by Wizards of the Coast for the game's introduction.
The card's illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, one of the most prominent early contributors to the game’s visual identity. Rush opted for a stark, symbolic representation that emphasized the weight of the card’s effect. Because its ability to draw seven cards for a single black mana was significantly more powerful than anticipated, the card became a landmark example of early balancing challenges and is now restricted or banned in nearly all competitive formats, cementing its status as an iconic piece of gaming history.
