Where it came from
The Contract token was released as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander set in 2021. Designed to support the specific mechanics of the Witherbloom Witchcraft deck, it serves as a physical representation of the game state when the card 'Bold Plagiarist' or related effects create a token that facilitates the exchange of resources between players. It belongs to the broader category of accessory tokens Wizards of the Coast produced to streamline gameplay for the Strixhaven expansion.
The visual design of the token reflects the gothic, academic aesthetic of the Strixhaven university setting, specifically drawing from the dark, nature-infused motifs associated with the Witherbloom college. The illustration emphasizes the arcane and formal nature of a magical pact, utilizing the school’s signature color palette of black and green. Upon its release, players generally received these tokens as functional utilities that helped maintain table clarity during complex Commander matches.
