Where it came from
Contractual Safeguard was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set. The card draws inspiration from the art deco-inspired, mob-ruled metropolis of New Capenna, reflecting the set's central themes of organized crime, family loyalty, and rigid, bureaucratic power dynamics. Its design serves as a protective utility card within the Commander format, emphasizing the game’s focus on shielding powerful board presence.
The artwork, illustrated by Wisnutan Bunnoboon, captures the gritty, luxurious aesthetic of the setting’s prohibition-era theme. It portrays a scene of magical fortification, reinforcing the flavor of a legalistic or supernatural contract meant to ensure the survival of an agent within the city's treacherous hierarchy. The card was well-received by players for its efficient defensive capabilities and its thematic fit within the white-color identity of the Magic: The Gathering card game.
