Provenance

Where it came from

Contradict was released in 2015 as part of the Dragons of Tarkir expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a functional reprint of the classic counterspell effect, serving the set's mechanical theme of manifesting spells and controlling the tempo of the game within the wedge-colored environment of the Tarkir plane.

The artwork for Contradict was commissioned from the illustrator Johannes Voss. Voss sought to capture the essence of a tactical negation, utilizing the vibrant, mystical aesthetic characteristic of the Dragons of Tarkir set to emphasize the magical conflict inherent in the spell's effect. It was generally well-received by players for its clear utility in limited play formats, fitting seamlessly into the strategic depth intended for the set.
