Where it came from
Contractual Safeguard was released as part of the New Capenna Commander set in 2022, designed to support the set's focus on the art deco-inspired, crime-syndicate-run metropolis of New Capenna. Mechanically, the card reflects the themes of loyalty and protection prevalent within the Obscura, one of the five prominent factions in the set, emphasizing the transactional and strategic nature of power in the city.
The illustration was crafted by artists consistent with the set's stylistic directive, which emphasizes clean lines, high-contrast lighting, and the architectural motifs of early 20th-century urban glamour. Upon its debut, the card was received as a versatile utility tool for white-aligned commander decks, valued primarily for its ability to protect commanders and preserve board presence in multiplayer formats.
