Where it came from
Coral Merfolk was featured in the 2017 Welcome Deck, a product designed by Wizards of the Coast to serve as an accessible entry point for new players learning the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card itself is a reprint of a classic creature type from the game's early history, specifically chosen to represent the blue color identity, which focuses on control and aquatic-themed entities. By including such cards, the designers aimed to provide a balanced, low-complexity environment for teaching fundamental mechanics like summoning creatures and managing mana.
The artwork for this particular iteration of the creature was rendered by artist Greg Staples. Staples, known for his atmospheric and moody style, sought to evoke the mysterious, submerged nature of the merfolk while maintaining the clarity required for a beginner-level game component. The design process focused on readability and thematic consistency within the wider set, which was distributed for free in many game stores to foster community growth and player retention.
