Where it came from
Drag Under is a black-aligned common card first printed for the Magic: The Gathering Welcome Deck 2017. These decks were designed by Wizards of the Coast as introductory tools, distributed for free to new players at hobby stores to teach the fundamental mechanics of the game. The card was crafted to showcase the color black’s ability to interact with creatures, utilizing a destruction effect coupled with a temporary card advantage mechanic.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Kieran Yanner, a prolific fantasy artist known for his contributions to the Magic: The Gathering card game. Yanner aimed to capture the theme of a watery grave, depicting a skeletal figure being pulled into the depths of a swamp. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, straightforward staple for beginner-level play, serving as a reliable entry point for players learning to navigate sorcery-speed removal and graveyard interaction.
