Provenance

Where it came from

Corpse Connoisseur was originally printed in the 2008 set Shards of Alara, designed to highlight the Grixis shard's affinity for the graveyard and necromantic themes. The card mechanics, which allow a player to search their library for a creature card and put it into the graveyard, serve as a foundational tool for reanimation-based strategies. The aesthetic direction for the card leaned into the gothic, decay-focused identity of the Grixis landscape.

The 2017 Modern Masters reprint featured updated card frames and served to provide players with renewed access to a staple card for the Reanimator archetype. The original illustration by Greg Staples captures the gruesome, methodical nature of the connoisseur, focusing on the character's unsettling connection to death and anatomical preservation. Upon its release, the card was well-received by competitive and casual players alike for its efficiency in facilitating graveyard-based play, becoming a recognized fixture in various formats including Commander.
