Where it came from
Corpse Connoisseur was released in 2008 as part of the Shards of Alara set for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the set's Grixis shard identity, which focused on graveyard interaction and the manipulation of death. As a creature that allows a player to tutor a card from their library into their graveyard, it served as a utility piece intended to fuel reanimation strategies.
The artwork was illustrated by Steve Prescott, who captured the macabre, scavenging aesthetic of the Grixis plane. The design focuses on a skeletal figure surrounded by the tools of its trade, emphasizing the plane's grim scarcity. Upon release, the card was well-received by players focusing on graveyard-centric decks, becoming a staple in Commander formats where repeatable access to the graveyard provides significant tactical advantage.
