Corpse Knight

Corpse Knight was introduced as part of the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in July 2019. It was designed as an uncommon creature card with a mechanics-focused ability that punishes opponents whenever another creature enters the battlefield under the controller's control, fitting into the Orzhov (white and black) color identity that emphasizes life drain and death triggers. The card was specifically chosen for the Core Set 2020 promotional release to provide players with a functional, synergetic piece for tribal and aristocrat-style deck archetypes.

The illustration for the card was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who utilized a dark, atmospheric aesthetic to capture the macabre nature of the undead warrior. In the context of the set's development, the design team sought to provide reliable, low-cost utility cards that could bridge the gap between casual and competitive play. The promo version, featuring the distinct Core Set 2020 expansion symbol and a unique collector number, was distributed through official Wizards of the Coast organized play channels to encourage participation in local game store events.
