Where it came from
Corpse Traders was released in 2020 as part of the Jumpstart set for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed as a self-contained, theme-based experience intended to streamline the entry process for new players by allowing them to combine two themed packs into a ready-to-play deck without the need for traditional deckbuilding.
The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who captured the grim, utilitarian aesthetic associated with the black-aligned cards of the set. The design reflects the mechanic of paying resources to force opponents to discard cards, a staple of interactive, graveyard-focused gameplay that has remained a consistent element in the game's broader design philosophy for decades.
