Where it came from
Corpse Traders was released in 2012 as part of the Avacyn Restored expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set served as the climactic conclusion to the gothic horror-themed Innistrad block, centering on the return of the archangel Avacyn to a plane overrun by darkness. The card reflects the grim, desperate atmosphere of the setting, depicting the macabre practices of those who profit from the aftermath of the set's central conflict.
The artwork for the card was created by fantasy illustrator Nils Hamm, whose signature style often emphasizes organic, earthy textures and moody, atmospheric lighting. Hamm intended to capture the opportunistic nature of the characters, grounding the supernatural elements of the world in a visceral, human misery. Upon release, the card was noted by players for its utilitarian role in graveyard-based strategies, where its ability to manipulate hands and life totals became a tactical consideration in limited play environments.
