Provenance

Where it came from

The Corrupted Key was released as part of the Mystery Booster: Playtest Cards, a series featured in the 2021 update to Wizards of the Coast's convention-exclusive supplemental set. These cards were designed to evoke the aesthetic of internal playtest materials, using a stark, minimalist visual style that strips away traditional frame ornamentation to prioritize the mechanical text and developer annotations.

The design of the Mystery Booster playtest set was spearheaded by the R&D team at Wizards of the Coast as a playful meta-commentary on the game's development process. By mimicking the look of unpolished, internal database entries, the cards invited players to experience the 'rough draft' phase of design. Corrupted Key was received as a curiosity by the community, noted primarily for its unconventional function and the deliberate 'work-in-progress' visual identity that characterizes this eclectic series.
