Where it came from
Gorilla Tactics was released in 2021 as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards, a unique series of non-tournament-legal cards inserted into select packs to showcase experimental design concepts. These cards were created by the Wizards of the Coast design team to explore unconventional mechanics and humorous designs that would not typically fit within the rigid constraints of standard Magic: The Gathering sets.
The card features an illustration by Titus Lunter, who captured the playful, anthropomorphic tone of the design. Much like the rest of the Playtest series, Gorilla Tactics was intended as a whimsical nod to the game's evolving R&D process, characterized by its hand-written aesthetic and its tongue-in-cheek mechanics, which were received by the community as a creative celebration of the game’s deep history and irreverent sense of humor.
