Where it came from
The Corrupted Key was released as part of the 2019 Mystery Booster Playtest Cards, a set curated by Wizards of the Coast for Magic: The Gathering. These cards were distributed exclusively at conventions during the Mystery Booster playtest events. They were designed to explore unconventional mechanical design space that would typically be deemed too experimental or chaotic for standard competitive sets, intentionally pushing the boundaries of traditional game rules.
The design of the Mystery Booster playtest cards often features minimalist aesthetics, characterized by a stark, prototype-style card frame that emphasizes functionality over thematic illustration. The Corrupted Key was created to test a specific design interaction involving artifact mechanics and cost-reduction, reflecting the team's desire to experiment with high-risk, high-reward effects in a casual, environment-focused setting. Its reception was marked by curiosity, as players appreciated the rare opportunity to engage with the internal, iterative design process of the game.
