Provenance

Where it came from

Crashing Boars was released as part of the Beatdown Box Set in 2000. This product was designed as a thematic introduction to the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, specifically catering to casual players by pitting two pre-constructed decks against one another. It captured a moment when Wizards of the Coast was expanding its reach through packaged experiences that emphasized gameplay and accessible mechanics.

The card features artwork by illustrator Greg Staples, who was tasked with conveying the raw, visceral energy of a stampede. The design emphasizes the green color philosophy of the game, focusing on creature strength and aggressive combat. While the card is a common staple within the set rather than a rarity, it is remembered for its distinct aesthetic that reflected the shift toward more dynamic, character-driven creature art at the turn of the millennium.
