Talruum Minotaur

The Talruum Minotaur was originally printed in the 1994 Visions expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Wizards of the Coast to lean into the game's creature-heavy combat themes. This specific version appeared as part of the 2000 Beatdown Box Set, a curated product released to introduce new players to the game by pairing two pre-constructed decks designed for aggressive play. The choice of the Talruum Minotaur for this set highlights the era's focus on simple, functional creatures that bolstered red-aligned decks, serving as a staple of limited and casual play environments during the game's formative years.

The artwork for the card was created by artist Brian Snoddy, whose work is celebrated for its gritty, textured fantasy aesthetic that helped define the visual identity of early Magic: The Gathering. His depiction of the Minotaur emphasizes a rugged, mythological ferocity that aligns with the game's foundational high-fantasy roots. The Beatdown Box Set reprint features updated card frames, marking the transition of classic cards into the more modern layout that became standard for the game at the turn of the millennium.
