Wayward Soul

Wayward Soul was released as part of the Beatdown Box Set, which debuted in 2000 as a thematic expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed as a fixed-card product, intended to serve as a self-contained dueling experience between two pre-constructed decks, focusing on the iconic rivalry between the characters Gerrard Capashen and Ertai. It served as a milestone for Wizards of the Coast, offering players a curated narrative encounter rather than the randomized distribution typical of booster packs.

The card features artwork by Mike Raabe, whose illustrative style during this era emphasized the dark, high-fantasy aesthetic that defined the game's late-90s and early-2000s trajectory. As a black-aligned enchantment, the design reflects the set's interest in graveyard interaction and attrition, mechanics that were central to the competitive environment at the time. While the card is often remembered more for its inclusion in the specialized box set than for individual tournament dominance, it remains a recognized artifact of a period when the game was heavily experimenting with supplemental, non-randomized distribution models.
