Where it came from
The Crested Sunmare originated as part of the Secret Lair Drop series, a specialized initiative by Wizards of the Coast that offers curated, thematic card releases featuring unique artistic treatments. This specific card was featured in the 'Showcase: Strixhaven' drop, a collection designed to highlight the aesthetic identity of the Strixhaven School of Mages within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. The design utilizes the distinct 'mystical archive' frame style, intended to evoke the appearance of ancient, magical grimoires found in the libraries of the university.
The art was rendered by illustrator Jesper Ejsing, known for his ability to infuse fantasy subjects with a sense of wonder and kinetic energy. In this interpretation, the Crested Sunmare is depicted with ethereal, solar-inspired motifs that align with the high-fantasy academic theme of the set. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players and collectors for its departure from traditional card borders, serving as a highly visible example of the design evolution within the Secret Lair product line.
