Where it came from
Crested Sunmare was released in 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation set for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to serve as a high-value centerpiece for creature-based synergy decks, specifically within the lifegain archetype prevalent in the Amonkhet block. Its design reflects the set's Egyptian-inspired aesthetic, depicting a radiant, divine stallion that mirrors the sun god Oketra's influence on the plane.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a prominent artist in the Magic community known for his ethereal and glowing style. Voss intended to capture the creature's celestial and protective nature, utilizing a bright, warm color palette that contrasted with the more desolate themes found elsewhere in the set. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its durability and consistent token generation, quickly becoming a staple in both Commander and Standard formats.
