Where it came from
Crested Sunmare was released in 2017 as part of the promotional offerings for the Magic: The Gathering expansion Hour of Devastation. The card was specifically distributed as a Buy-a-Box promotional variant, a program designed to incentivize players to purchase full display boxes of booster packs from local game stores. It features unique alternate artwork by artist Igor Kieryluk, distinct from the standard version found in the core set.
The card is deeply thematic to the Amonkhet block, which drew heavy inspiration from ancient Egyptian mythology. The design team sought to capture the aesthetic of the Sun God Oketra, manifesting as a spectral, white-maned horse that reinforces the set's focus on life-gain mechanics and creature-based synergy. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its powerful board-presence abilities and the ethereal, high-contrast illustration style that defined the promo series.
