Where it came from
Cruel Ultimatum was originally printed in the 2008 Shards of Alara expansion, designed by the Magic: The Gathering development team to showcase the powerful, color-intensive mechanics of the Grixis shard. It quickly became a quintessential card for control-based strategies due to its ability to swing the momentum of a game by simultaneously draining an opponent and bolstering the caster.
The Outlaws of Thunder Junction Art Series version, released in 2024, is a premium promotional offering that features the card's artwork in a borderless, frame-less format. This series is intended for collectors who wish to appreciate the digital illustrations commissioned by Wizards of the Coast without the presence of game text or mana symbols, emphasizing the aesthetic evolution of the game's iconic spells.
